The donut: irresistible; delicious; a temptation for anyone and everyone.  Few treats are as unpretentious and universally appreciated.  But, can the humble donut be artisanal;… gourmet even?  The folks at The Salty think so.  So do their critics and customers that cannot get enough of the high-quality, small-batch, seasonal, chef-made delights.  Their story is featured among the most prominent media outlets and rated as the best donut-shop in the country by Thrillist, Business Insider, and Zagat.  The Salty has redefined the donut – and they asked the architects at the Storyn Studio for Architecture to redefine the Donut Shop.

Storyn Studio looked to the evolution of the coffee shop – from no frills black drip in a diner to sustainably sourced espresso in a chic coffee bar – for inspiration.  At The Salty in Orlando you can enjoy the best donut of your life in a space to match.  The shop employs clean, modern simplicity with a warm material palette to create a space where you might want to linger with friends, even after your donut is just a pleasant memory.

The Salty is a place for everyone.  A party of one can experience the newest flavors of the season at bar seating overlooking the patio.  Or, bring your friends so they might try a confection that is at once familiar and entirely new.  Stay a while at your own secluded table, or in the middle of everything on the sofas.  Or, take your donut on the patio.  The shop invites the outdoors in through a wall of windows that brighten the whole space.  They make it feel open and inviting.  They also allow for the whole shop to extend itself to the outside.  The delicately folded textile canopy glows in the Florida sunlight making a soft, comfortable ambiance both inside and out.  It leads to the outdoor seating with just enough enclosure to feel private.  The same warm wood material palette links inside and out.  Come and go as you want.

The bar itself is a celebration of everything donut.  Here the glass case is front and center, putting your favorite dessert on a literal pedestal.  The display case tempts you with myriad flavors placed right before you.  The back of bar is another glass wall to the kitchen showing the action where magical flavors are made.  The dropped ceiling gently curves downward, drawing your eye from finished product to its origin.  From batter to crumb, this is a place that is all about the donut, and gives you a privileged position to experience it.
